Congress Pushes for War With Iran

This could be the first step in the preparation for war with Iran. We saw the same kind of saber-rattling before the attack on Iraq. But any decision to bomb/invade Iran will be left for after the election. And it doesn’t matter who’s elected President:

In another resolution apparently designed to prepare for war against Iran, the U.S. House of Representatives, in an overwhelmingly bipartisan 401-11 vote, has passed a resolution (HR 568) urging the president to oppose any policy toward Iran “that would rely on containment as an option in response to the Iranian nuclear threat.”

With its earlier decision to pass a bill that effectively sought to ban any negotiations between the United States and Iran, a huge bipartisan majority of Congress has essentially told the president that nothing short of war or the threat of war is an acceptable policy.

Israeli attack on Iran could pull US into new war

I’m glad the mainstream press is posing this concern. The Israelis want to find a way to attack Iran and get the U.S. involved. This time around, though, there enough people out there ready to question a new military involvement. The pro-Israel lobby and the neocons succeeded in getting us to attack Iraq. This time it will be different when it comes to Iran–I hope:

If Israeli were to make a pre-emptive attack on Iran’s nuclear sites, it could draw the U.S. into a new Mideast conflict.

That’s a prospect dreaded by a war-weary Pentagon because it could mean pressing into service the top tier of American firepower — warplanes, warships and special operations forces.

The outcome would be unpredictable in one of the world’s most volatile regions.

Is Iran Plotting Terror on U.S. Soil or is it Just Propaganda?

The U.S. government and the neocons are preparing us for war reminiscent of the weeks and months leading up to the Invasion of Iraq. But such a conflict would have terrible implications. Already we are seeing oil prices skyrocketing. This President has already shown his willingness to fight wars, as with Afghanistan. Many naively believe that Barack Obama is a total departure from the Bush years in where wars were started under false pretenses. And if re-elected the current occupant of the White House will most likely get us into another disastrous conflict overseas:

The U.S. is working overtime across 16 U.S. intelligence agencies to identify, monitor, and disrupt the activities of Iranian agents and surrogate groups like Hezbollah as officials see a growing possibility of an attack by Iran on American interests.

The concern is based on two factors: one, an uptick of surveillance of U.S. targets overseas by suspected Iranian agents. And two, the rash of coordinated plots against Israeli targets in four countries last week.

CBS News has learned that U.S. intelligence officials have observed suspected Iranian agents conducting surveillance on U.S. government buildings more than a dozen times in the last year – in Europe and South America as well as suspected probes in Bahrain – headquarters to the U.S. Navy’s Fifth fleet.

Ralph Boelter, the FBI’s top counterterrorism official has summoned the heads of 56 field offices to a classified, 90-minute video conference to underscore that the bureau “remains concerned Iran would consider attacks in the United States.”
